L.E.A.D with Comics
The Literacy Education in Adult Detention (LEAD) With Comics is a six-week program for incarcerated adults that helps improve their literacy and art skills.
L.E.A.D. (Literacy Education in Adult Detention) With Comics is Pop Culture Classroom’s ongoing project in jail systems and detention centers across Colorado. Working with specially trained teachers from local nonprofits and Denver Public Schools, Pop Culture Classroom offers this six-week course for male and female incarcerated young adults, ages 18 to 24 years old, with the goal of improving their art and literacy skills. To teach this course, Pop Culture Classroom instructors use an adapted version of our Storytelling Through Comics curriculum specifically designed for incarcerated youth.
At Pop Culture Classroom, we believe anyone’s life can be transformed by the educational power of pop culture—and we can’t wait to share our passion for learning through graphic arts with the under served populations who are most in need of inspiration. In addition, current research shows that inmates that receive literacy education have a 16% recidivism rate, while those that don’t receive these services are over four times more likely to end up in jail again. The L.E.A.D. project is a creative way to reach struggling readers and help them find a positive way forward.
